Sirs, Ladies and Gentlemen,
Welcome to the website dedicated to the British Army of the Rhine and its Locations.
May 2008 will see the first anniversary of the site, in its present form. Those who have been following its progress will bear testament to what has been achieved in the last twelve months. This can only be attributed to all those who have contributed, shown interest and generally, 'spread the word'.
Many little known places have arisen over the last few months, with the likes of Wüppertal, Hamburg, Essen and Brannenburg being placed firmly on the map. The Benelux countries of Belgium and the Netherlands now feature, owing to their significance in the supply chain; should the Russian hordes have came galloping across the inner German border.
With the foundations now fixed in place, the next emphasis is to add branches to the site in the form of kit, units and the aspects specific to BAOR. These include:
1) Major exercise's carried out in readiness.
2) Border patrols (we are looking for a description of how this was implemented, by which units, how often, where they would be accommodated during this time, etc, etc).
3) Brixmis and its liason duties.
Currently underway are a number of efforts to add to the site in the way of:
1) In theatre schooling.
2) Rest and recreation activities.
3) BAOR and BFPO numbers.
The above is by no means a straightforward task, with it being scheduled for completion by Autumn, earliest. Anyone wishing to add to this area is encouraged to do so.
Next, should your regiment/unit not be mentioned on the site, it is not because we have decided to ignore it. It will not feature because we genuinely do not know it was stationed there. Email in and amendments will be made. If you had the privilege of seeing the full tour of duty, the dates would be welcomed as would the unit relieved and the oncoming unit
World War Two. There are many local historians who know the full history of these camps from the first brick being laid, to the eventual hand over to the Stadt. The use of these camps whilst in Nazi hands is as intriguing to many, as when they were the stamping grounds of the British Army. Again, get in touch as this is a platform to air your efforts. All work displayed is attributed to the source and there is no reason why a link to your site/email address cannot be added.
Suggestions. This site does not belong to us, but to those who actually take interest. If you believe that it lacks in certain ways or could be heading in more worthy directions, then please get in touch. Your comments will not go unappreciated.
Lastly, thank you. May our gratitude be shown by saying thank you to all those who have done so much, for the good and benefit of the site as a whole. It is fully understood how much research, time and toil, has been placed into many of the featured articles. The appreciation is very often shown in emails sent by individuals, who have been given the opportunity to reminisce on what some describe as 'the best years of my life'.
God Save the Queen.
